Aimed at photo enthusiasts and professional photographers alike, Canon’s new PIXMA Pro-1 is an impressive inkjet photo printer, which they claim will help photographers “produce the highest-level possible in image quality.”, according to executive View President and General Manager Yuichi Ishizuka. The printer offers a 12-ink system, which incorporates an all new FINE Print Head (4800×2400 DPI) and the addition of 5 monochrome inks (Photo Black, Matte Black, Gray, Dark Gray and Light Gray). This combination, along with the addition of a Chroma Optimizer, helps the Pro-1 not only produce stunning color photos, but also enhances black density to produce beautiful B&W photos, offer smoother gradations, and helps suppress graininess.
Another new feature on the Pro-1 is a tubular ink system. On past models the ink tanks rode on the print head itself, where the Pro-1 stores the ink tanks on the left and right sides of the printer. The ink is then feed into this tubular system, which helps improve print speeds due to less mass on the print head itself. Canon claims you can pump out a 13×19-inch print in just 4 minutes and 20 seconds; which is about 1.8x faster than its predecessor, the 9500 Mark II. The ink tanks have also increased in size, offering 157% more ink than past models (approx. 2.5 times larger). Luckily, the price of these ink cartridges hasn’t increased by 157%!
The Canon PIXMA Pro-1 is scheduled to start shipping sometime this fall, with a MSRP of just $999 USD: quite a bargain in our eyes. We are on the list to get one of these beauties in for review as soon as they become available, so stay tuned for Steve’s in-depth review.
